"Fucking females is for poofs." Crazy Larry
☆☆☆☆☆ Classic
Layer Cake (2004) is a highly intelligent, stylish crime thriller that brims with double crosses.
Directed by Matthew Vaughn.
Starring Daniel Craig, Sienna Miller and Michael Gambon among many others.
Matthew weaves a fun and twisted crime caper that is stylish and great to watch. Vaughn manages to artfully blend irony within the non-stop violence. Matthew excels at visually stitching together two completely different scenes that beautifully blend and morph into one. The director Luc Besson uses dialogue to connect two completely different scenes and seamlessly blend them into one. Both Vaughn and Besson are masters at propelling the story forward in utterly fascinating ways that keep you glued to the narrative.
I got to hand it to Daniel for keeping his performance simple. Craig has a solid grasp of the characters inner life and manages to bring it out without unnecessary vocal and physical contortions. No wonder the producers chose Daniel to play James Bond after watching him in this film. Sienna Miller is visually stunning and yet has a sense of humor that was delightful to watch. I would love to see Sienna in a sophisticated comedy. Michael Gambon steals every scene he is in with his resonant voice that makes me think that is how God would sound if he spoke. Michael has one of the richest and most soulful voices I have ever heard.
In the scene below watch Matthew visually morph one scene into another that beautiful moves the story forward and narrates itself. Film is a visual medium that really needs very little dialogue to be understood globally. Vaughn like Ermek Tursunov's Келин - Kelin (2009) share a visual artistry that is understood universally. I personally prefer a visually story over a vocally narrative.
